Take it from me. In primary school, my fridge was always full of cakes (eclairs, roulades, perfectly shaped sugar roses, etc). My mom was a patissier. Guess who invited all the kids in the neighbourhood to taste said delicacies? And guess what they did after they had the cake? They stayed for a game of Lego, Barbie and hide and seek. Tadaa. I had friends.
HOWEVER, just because the cakes brought in the kids, it doesn’t mean they were always the right prospective friends for me. Half of the time none of them wanted to play Spot it :(
A lot of the lead magnets out there are a bit like cake. Once people have it, they’re full and they wanna go home.
Or they wanna play trucks (gross).
Or they're already sick of cake and are in the mood for savoury.
When we approach it like that, our list building efforts are doomed.
And marketing starts feeling a little too...marketingy.
